George

(? third/fourth century)
   Legendary Saint.
Little is known of the life of St George, although he is believed to have died a martyr, possibly at Lydda in Palestine. He is the subject of many legends including that of the slaying of a fearsome dragon. Most authorities believe that this is a Christianised version of the tale of the Greek hero, Perseus. He became the patron saint of England in the thirteenth century when King Edward III nominated him as guardian of the new Order of the Garter. In recent years, because doubt has been cast on his existence, the Roman Catholic Church has removed George from its calendar of saints, but his flag (a red cross on a white background) remains the flag of England and a component of the Union Jack.
